Spittin’ Chicklets has done us all a great favor. Yes, they tracked down Mike Richards and convinced him to come on and do an interview. Richards has been more or less very private since his career ended. We mostly see images of him fishing on his Instagram account, but he hasn’t offered much as far as interviews go.
Mike Richards Interview Highlights
Well, that has changed. It sounds like Mike is doing well, and he has some funny stories. I don’t want to ruin it, but keep an ear out for stories from his junior days playing with Sidney Crosby before he was “Crosby,” being the captain with the Flyers, and winning the Cup with the Kings. He even goes into playing in the Olympics in Vancouver and the wild times with a certain Kings teammate. Highlights include:
- The Tootoo Flu
- His relationship with Pronger
- Dry Island
- Drew Doughty
- The surprise player who was key to the Kings’ Cup wins.
The interview starts around the 23-minute mark and lasts for about an hour.
Wicked Deke’s Take
Insightful interview. I’ve always been a huge Mike Richards fan, and there is little doubt he and Jeff Carter were critical to helping the Kings take the next step to winning a Stanley Cup. The guy was a winner who gave his body to win, and suffered for it. Although the interview doesn’t cover the tail end of his career and his controversial contract buyout with the Kings, Spittn’ Chicklets shouldn’t be given too much grief. Richards probably conditioned the interview on leaving that part out, but it still good to hear from one of the more clutch players we’ve seen in the last 30 years in the NHL. Perhaps even better, it sounds as though Richards is happy – getting married, fishing most days, and snowbirding in Florida during the cold Canadian winters. Oddly, he doesn’t watch much hockey.
Finally, the Drew Doughty comments are hilarious. “Yzerman asked us to tone it down. Walk out of the meeting. Drew – “So, what are we doing tonight?” Classic.
